Celebrating British Sandwich Week 15th May - 21st May 2011

It's British Sandwich Week this week so there's no excuse to put up with your floppy ham sandwiches. The week, which runs from 15th May-21st May 2011 celebrates the sandwich and the Flour Advisory Bureau offers new recipes for different sandwich combinations. Why not try them out? And while you're at it, you can also try out the eggy-fried Mozzarella in Carozza and the Coronation Chicken sandwiches on this site.

Some sandwich facts!
  • Britain's most popular sandwiches are: chicken, cheese, ham & egg (although in our house everyone seems to have a thing for tuna mayonnaise & chopped spring onion.
  • 58% of sandwiches are made from sliced bread, 4% are made with wraps and paninis make up 2% of the total. I have to say I'm a sucker for a toasted panini, every time.
  • 3.2 billion sandwiches leave the home each year in lunchboxes
  • We are more likely to eat sandwiches when the weather is hot than when it's chilly.
My personal favourites are: mozzarella and fresh green pesto in a toasted sandwich made with nutty bread but I also love New York Deli style sandwiches piled up with pastrami, gherkins, cheese and mustard. What is your favourite sandwich?
